Council Meetings

Chief and Council meet every Tuesday at 10:00 AM to discuss community priorities, make decisions, and address the needs of Welamukotuk First Nation. Members are encouraged to stay informed and engaged by reaching out with questions, concerns, or ideas to help guide our community forward.

Chief and Council

The Chief and Council of Welamukotuk First Nation are the elected leaders entrusted with guiding our community, protecting our rights, and shaping the path forward for future generations. Their responsibility is to listen to the voices of our people, make decisions in the best interest of the Nation, and ensure that our programs and services reflect the needs and values of our community.

Chief and Council Term

The current leadership of Welamukotuk First Nation was elected on August 4, 2025, and will serve until August 4, 2029. This four-year term is dedicated to advancing the priorities of our Nation, strengthening governance, and supporting the well-being of our members through strong, transparent, and accountable leadership.

Roles & Responsibilities

Chief – Provides overall leadership and representation for Welamukotuk First Nation, both within the community and in partnerships with governments, organizations, and other Nations.

Councillors – Work alongside the Chief to develop policies, oversee departments, and ensure that the community’s needs and priorities are addressed. Council members vote on decisions and the Chief can break the tie if needed.

All Chief and Council oversee all portfolios and make decisions together. We have people appointed to certain portfolios for easy contact with each department, then any decisions come back to the table to be made collectively.

Together as a Council – Decisions are made collectively, with respect for Wolastoqey values, traditions, and the voices of our people.

Chief and Council are committed to:

  • Practicing good governance built on transparency and accountability
  • Preserving and promoting Wolastoqey culture, language, and traditions
  • Supporting community wellness, education, and opportunity for all members
  • Building sustainable economic development for future generations
  • Protecting our lands, waters, and resources as the foundation of our identity and way of life

Our Leadership in Action

Leadership in Welamukotuk is not just about governance, it is about community. Chief and Council work in partnership with staff, Elders, youth, and families to ensure that every voice matters in shaping the future of our Nation. Through open communication, they strive to remain connected, approachable, and accountable to the people they serve.
